How to Claim a Need

NeedBridge is an email-powered need-matching platform that connects people in need with volunteers through nonprofit organizations. Claiming a need is how you tell the organization that you can help fulfill a specific request. The process is straightforward and does not require an account. This article walks through the steps from start to finish.

Step 1: Find a Need

Before you can claim a need, you need to find one. You can discover needs in two ways:

From the Website

Visit the organization's public needs page and browse or filter the available needs. Click on any need card to view its full details. See Browsing Available Needs for more on finding needs.

From an Email Notification

If you are registered as a volunteer, you receive email notifications when new needs are posted in your selected areas. These emails include a link directly to the need detail page, where you can review the details and claim it.

Step 2: Review the Need Details

On the need detail page, review the full description, category, area, urgency, due date, and any images or helpful links. Make sure you are able to fulfill what is being asked for before proceeding.

Step 3: Click the Claim Button

When you are ready to help, click the "I Can Help" button (or similar claim button) on the need detail page. This opens the claim form.

Step 4: Fill Out the Claim Form

The claim form collects the information the case worker needs to coordinate with you:

Name

Your first and last name so the case worker knows who to contact.

Email

Your email address. The case worker will use this to reach out with coordination details.

Phone

Your phone number. Some case workers prefer to coordinate by phone, especially for time-sensitive needs.

Message (Optional)

An optional text field where you can add any helpful context. For example:

  • "I can drop this off on Saturday morning."
  • "I have two of the three items requested."
  • "I live nearby and can help anytime this week."

Quantity (If Applicable)

Some needs allow partial fulfillment. If a need requests 10 boxes of diapers and you can provide 4, you can enter the quantity you are able to contribute. Other volunteers may claim the remainder.

Step 5: Submit the Claim

Click the submit button to complete your claim. Two things happen immediately:

  1. The case worker is notified. The case worker assigned to this need receives an alert that a volunteer has claimed it. They will review your information and reach out to coordinate.

  2. You see a confirmation. The page displays a confirmation message letting you know your claim was received. You may also receive a confirmation email depending on the organization's settings.

Claiming From Email vs. From the Website

The claiming process works the same whether you arrive from an email notification or by browsing the website directly:

  • From email: Click the link in the notification email, which takes you to the need detail page. Then follow the steps above.
  • From the website: Browse to the need, click into the details, and follow the steps above.

In both cases, you fill out the same claim form and the case worker receives the same notification.

No Account Needed

You do not need a NeedBridge account to claim a need. The claim form collects your contact information directly. This means anyone with the link to a need can volunteer to help, which makes it easy to share needs with friends, family, or community members.

If you are a registered volunteer, your information may be pre-associated with your profile, but registration is not required to claim.

What Happens Next

After you submit your claim, the case worker will contact you to coordinate the details -- timing, location, drop-off instructions, or whatever is needed to complete the fulfillment. See After You Claim a Need for more on what to expect.

Tips

  • Claim promptly. Needs with high urgency or broad appeal may be claimed quickly.
  • Be specific in your message. If you have constraints on timing or can only partially fulfill the need, say so in the message field. This helps the case worker plan.
  • Double-check your contact information. The case worker cannot reach you if your email or phone number is incorrect.
