Volunteer Quickstart
Thank you for volunteering. NeedBridge makes it easy to help your community -- you will receive email notifications when someone nearby has a need, and you can claim it with a single click. No app to download, no account to create, no login to remember. This guide covers everything you need to get started.
Step 1: Sign Up on Your Organization's Page
Your organization has a public signup page where you can register as a volunteer. You may have received the link in a flyer, email, social media post, or from someone at the organization.
On the signup page, enter:
- Name -- So the organization knows who you are.
- Email -- This is how you will receive need notifications. Use an email address you check regularly.
- Phone number -- So a case worker can reach you to coordinate details after you claim a need.
- Address -- Helps the organization understand where volunteers are located relative to the needs in their area.
Step 2: Choose Your Service Areas
After entering your information, select the service areas where you are willing and able to help. Areas are geographic regions defined by the organization -- they might be neighborhoods, cities, zip codes, or counties.
You can select as many areas as you like. You will only receive notifications for needs posted in the areas you choose.
Step 3: Set Your Notification Preferences
Choose how often you want to receive email notifications about new needs:
- Immediate -- Get an email as soon as a new need is posted in your areas. Best if you want to be first to respond.
- Daily digest -- Receive one email per day summarizing all new needs in your areas. Good if you prefer fewer emails.
- Weekly digest -- Receive one email per week with a summary of needs. Best if you want a lighter touch.
You can change your notification frequency at any time using the preferences link in any email you receive from NeedBridge.
Step 4: Browse Available Needs
You do not have to wait for an email. If your organization has a public needs page, you can visit it at any time to browse open needs in your areas. This is a good way to find something to help with right away.
Step 5: Claim a Need
When you see a need you can help with -- whether in an email notification or on the website -- click "I can help." That is it. No login required, no app to download.
When you claim a need:
- The case worker who posted it is notified immediately.
- Other volunteers can see that someone has stepped up.
- The case worker will reach out to you to coordinate the details (timing, location, drop-off instructions, etc.).
Only claim a need if you are confident you can follow through. If your plans change after claiming, let the case worker know as soon as possible so they can find another volunteer.
Step 6: Complete the Need
After you claim a need, a case worker from the organization will contact you to coordinate. This might be a quick email or phone call to confirm details like:
- When and where to deliver items
- What specific items or sizes are needed
- Any other logistics
Once you have fulfilled the need, the case worker will mark it complete. You are done -- and someone in your community is better off because of your help.
Managing Your Preferences
You can update your settings at any time. Every email from NeedBridge includes a link to manage your preferences, where you can:
- Change your service areas -- Add or remove areas as your availability changes.
- Change your notification frequency -- Switch between immediate, daily, or weekly notifications.
- Update your contact information -- Keep your email, phone number, and address current.
Unsubscribing
If you need to take a break or stop receiving notifications, every email includes an unsubscribe link. Clicking it will stop all notifications from that organization.
Unsubscribing does not delete your information. If you want to start volunteering again later, you can re-subscribe using the same organization signup page.
